MoonGather Winter Vigil
Six Months of Ritual and Reflection through winter’s descent
What is the Winter Vigil
Through the long winter, women have always gathered to keep the flame alive.
Moongather: The Winter Vigil is a season of circles that are part ritual, part reflection, part rest.
We come together to strengthen the spirit and the bones, to listen for the quiet teachings of the dark, and to remember that we belong to one another and to the living world.
October: The Threshold
October is the month of crossing—the thinning of the veil, the soft turn toward the dark. This first gathering opens Moongather: The Winter Vigil, a six-month journey through winter.
Across many lineages, this is the season of remembrance. In the Christian calendar, it's All Souls; in Celtic lands, Samhain; in Latin America, the Days of the Dead; in countless traditions, a time when ancestors draw close and the boundary between worlds grows porous. We honor those who walked before us and especially the women who endured, created, and carried wisdom through long nights of their own.
For women, this season holds a particular potency. It is the time of descent: the body’s knowing that cycles turn, that nothing blooms forever, that death and rest are necessary for renewal. To gather now is to step into an ancient rhythm of tending the inner fire while the outer world darkens.
We’ll light candles, hold a stone or piece of earth, and listen for what the darkness wants to teach—about continuity, about strength, about the quiet work of becoming.
As we enter this long night together, we begin the work of remembering what holds us. The earth beneath our feet, the breath in our lungs, the warmth of one another’s presence. These circles are small acts of devotion to the living world and to the line of women who have always known how to make beauty in the dark.
In this first Moongather gathering, we will take time to arrive. We’ll breathe, speak our names, and share a brief reflection on what this season stirs in us. We’ll light our candles, hold our chosen stones or pieces of earth, and let the silence between words teach us something about belonging.
This is not a performance or a class. It is a shared ritual space that serves as a pause in the noise where body, spirit, and story can rest together in community. You do not need to know any specific spiritual language to join. Bring your grief, your questions, your laughter, your weariness. Bring what is real.
